Preservations and Imaginations: Buildings and Beyond in Historic Charleston

John Nicholas Brown Center presents:

"Preservations and Imaginations: Buildings and Beyond in Historic Charleston"

WHERE: John Nicholas Brown Center, 357 Benefit St., Providence, RI

WHEN: 5:30pm

Today Charleston, South Carolina, enjoys a reputation as a destination city for cultural and heritage tourism. In her recent book, A Golden Haze of Memory, Stephanie E. Yuhl looks back to the crucial period between 1920 and 1940, when local leaders developed Charleston's trademark image as "America's Most Historic City."

In this talk, Yuhl, associate professor of history at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA, will examine a broad notion of historic preservation as rooted in cultural activities beyond architecture. Looking not only at how traditional preservationists, but also artists and spiritual societies, contribute to historic preservation, Yuhl will also consider the problem of historical memory in creating a "historic" city.

A reception will follow the lecture at 6:30 p.m., and copies of Professor Yuhl's book will be available for sale.

This event is free and open to the public.
