A Conversation With Henry Louis Gates Jr. -- is an interview series that introduces viewers to the writers of best-selling books. In this episode, Henry Louis Gates, chair of Harvard's African-American Studies department, discusses his new book, America Behind the Color Line: Dialogues with African Americans, with Karen Grigsby Bates, a Los Angeles-based correspondent for NPR's Day to Day. A compilation of 30 thought- provoking essays on the Black experience in this country, they act as a companion piece to the four-part PBS documentary airing in February 2004. For the project, Gates traveled across American to interview such notables as Colin Powell, Maya Angelou, Vernon Jordan, and Morgan Freeman as well as everyday folk just trying to make it day-to-day.
