Picturing America, an exciting new initiative from the National Endowment
for the Humanities, brings masterpieces of American art into classrooms and
libraries nationwide. Through this innovative program, students and citizens
will gain a deeper appreciation of our country's history and character
through the study and understanding of its art.

New Awards Announced
Michael
Bell $1990 for Languages of the Land: A Dialogue With Salter Grove.
Funds support additional oral histories to capture the multifaceted
history of Salter Grove in Warwick, RI. A prior phase of this
documentation project, which included a collaboration with artist Holly
Ewald, received a RICH mini grant in 2006. Classical Association of New England (CANE) $2000 for Revolution &
Reaction: Radical Changes & Continuities in the Ancient World.
Funds support full and partial scholarships for Rhode Island teachers
to attend the CANE Summer Institute. Participants in the Institute
attend workshops, symposia, lectures and films regarding the ancient
world.

Congratulations to RICH grantee, Robert Rose of Rosewood Productions, for having his televised production of Edwin O'Connor's play The Greatest Salesman in Rhode Island selected by PBS for national distribution.

Terra Nova, Vida Nova Goes to the Academy
Our grantee, Marjory O'Toole, of the Little Compton Historical Society, just informed us that the CD produced for her project, Terra Nova, Vida Nova - The Portugese in Little Compton, is being incorporated into a history curriculum at Providence College. |

Justice Talks Recognized
RICH Program for AmeriCorps Volunteers Honored
Our program, Justice Talks: Reflections on Civic Engagement was recognized recently by the Project on Civic Reflection. Justice Talks, a unique discussion series for all RI AmeriCorps volunteers and staff, uses literature to illuminate the meaning of service.
The Civic Reflection newsletter reported on our data, collected from the 2008 sessions:- 69% of respondents said that Justice Talks had improved their AmeriCorps experience.
- 79% said that Justice Talks had improved their relationships with other AmeriCorps members.
Some comments from participants:
- This program opened my eyes to the beliefs and values of others.
- Justice Talks has reinforced by passion for public service.
- It has made me put myself in the shoes of those I am serving and made me want to serve my community throughout my life.
RICH partners with the Rhode Island Service Alliance and the Feinstein Institute for Public Service on this program.
